5 Simple Tricks to Make Small Room Look Bigger

By Ryan Pagal

If you have a small bedroom, you’re not alone – it’s one of the most common bedroom decorating issues and these problems arise when small starts to feel claustrophobic. When we have too many things, or those things are too large, they can quickly overwhelm a space so by restoring a sense of order and calm in the bedroom, use minimal elements to maximize the sense of space.

1. Clear out the clutter.

There's nothing that makes a small space feel more cramped than having too much stuff. Work out ways to get collections out of view, organized behind doors, table skirts, or on shelves. With things neatly arranged and out of sight, the space that is in view will feel orderly and open.

2. Add reflective surfaces.

Ideally, you should put a mirror on the opposite side of a window. You will see the reflection of the outside giving the room more depth and you will be optimizing the most light coming in from your windows. Mirrors bounce light back into the room making it appear larger but if you do not have a window on the opposite side of your mirror you can use a lamp instead.

3. Let in the light.

One simple trick to make a room appear bigger is to create a vertical path of vision for people to follow. When the eye is inclined to look up and down, versus horizontally, rooms appear to be bigger. Try placing lighting fixtures higher up in the room. This could include wall sconces, overhead lighting, and taller lamps. Take the focus off the actual width of the room and push people’s vision upward.

Another simple way to make a room appear bigger is to take advantage of daylight. Natural light immediately makes a room feel less confined and more spacious.

4. White it out.

White is often used as a ceiling color because it complements almost every shade on the color wheel and works well in most color schemes. White reflects light, brightening the room and making it appear larger. White also reflects the other colors in the room.

5. Most importantly, keep it simple.

To make rooms look bigger without knocking down walls, you have to create the illusion of space. Obviously, that means you’ll want to minimize clutter as much as possible.

Instead of trying to fit as much art on a wall as possible, use just one or two pieces on one wall, for instance.
